When 20 Years in the Making Looks Like Overnight Success

Bien and Nyashinski are arguably the two biggest names in Kenyan music. Every other artist either looks up to them or wants to be them. What many people forget is that the two artists and collaborators had a very long journey to the top before they reached their current position.

Bien’s musical career began as a member of Sauti Sol, which he formed with his classmates at Upper Hill Secondary. Nyashinski’s career, on the other hand, began as a member of Kleptomaniax, which he formed with his classmates at Nairobi School. After high school, both artists continued to make music professionally.

What many might not realize is that both Nyashinski and Bien were making music in the mid to late 2000s. It was not until each left their respective groups that the two became the household names and brands that they are today.

What is the point of this story? The point of this story is to highlight the fact that the reason Bien and Nyashinski are who they are today is because they never gave up on their dream. Though Nyashinski took a hiatus from music during his stay in the United States, his return to music electrified Kenyan music. And while everybody loves and loved Sauti Sol, Bien, as a solo artist, is not just taking over Africa but the world.

Both artists are signed to major labels and are expected to continue rising. With many new acts entering the Kenyan music industry, many of them have Bien and Nyashinski to thank for paving the way and opening up doors for Kenyan artists and music. Bien has been quoted on numerous occasions saying that despite the end of Sauti Sol, Sauti Sol lasted longer than a lot of marriages. Many would recall a time when Camp Mulla was bigger than Sauti Sol. Now, both are no more, but Sauti Sol has given birth to Sol Generation, and Bien continues to fly the Kenyan flag high.

If you are a Kenyan artist reading this, this is your sign not to give up. It’s too early. The journey to the top is not easy, and neither is it a short one. Be patient! Give yourself at least 10 -15 years before you reach where these giants are today. There is no shortcut to success.
