Something interesting is happening in Nairobi. If you walk through the streets of the city today in the CBD, you will notice something tofauti kidogo. Cameras are out and people are filming skits, tiktok dances, music videos and having photo shoots in the streets of CBD. This calls to shows that creativity in Kanairo is everywhere. For many people, Nairobi has always been known as Kenya’s business hub but lately the city is slowly gaining another reputation, one of Africa’s most creative cities and the signs are becoming hard to ignore.

One of the most noticeable changes in Nairobi today is how the streets themselves have become content studios. If you pass through town on any normal afternoon, you’ll likely see content creators everywhere. For many creatives, Nairobi’s streets offer something studios can’t always give and that is the aesthetic of our buildings and that real city vibe, I would like to think that the matatus, street vendors, busy sidewalks add character to the content being created.

Another reason Nairobi’s creative scene is growing so fast is because of the internet. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube have completely changed the game. A dancer, photographer, musician, and comedian no longer need big companies to thrive. All they need is creativity, consistency and a phone. Many young creators in Nairobi are now building careers from content they produce, they start with simple videos and suddenly their content goes viral. From there, opportunities open up from brand partnerships to collaborations and more. It’s creating a new kind of economy empowered by creativity and I am here for it all!

One thing that makes Nairobi’s creative scene unique is how collaborative it is: musicians work with dancers, videographers link up with fashion creators and comedians collaborate with influencers. In many cases, creatives simply meet online or even on the streets of town and decide to create something together from a simple conversation like “Bro, Ukona camera? Wacha tufanye shoot na tucollaborate” and just like that something new is created. This kind of spontaneous collaboration is helping ideas move faster and allowing more talent to shine.

I feel like with Nairobi being a city full of contrasts, modern buildings next to old streets, luxury spaces and the fast city life is what is inspiring creatives. It offers endless background stories and characters that can be turned into content. That is why many creatives are choosing Nairobi as their playground. The most exciting part about Nairobi’s creative boom is that it’s still growing. Everyday a new creator is emerging, new collaborations are happening and new trends are being born. Walk through town long enough especially on a weekend and you will see it yourself, cameras rolling, people dancing, photo shoots happening on sidewalks. Creativity is literally happening in the open and if this energy continues Nairobi might not just become Kenya’s creative capital but it could become one of Africa’s most influential creative cities. Ngoja uone 😉
