The Only Mistake Gachagua Made

Politics is full of secrecy. As the electorate, we only know what politicians tell us, not what they are thinking. For the first time ever, a politician is telling it all. The good, the bad, and the ugly, and we must admit that this is unprecedented. Former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has made it his life mission to expose all the lies and schemes that happened during his short stint in office, and nobody is safe, not even the president. All you need to do is give him a microphone, and before you can say lights, camera, action the man is brewing hot tea.

Call him a jilted ex-lover or a tribalist, but you cannot ignore that the man is not only a smart politician but also a great strategist. I would not want to be Rigathi Gachagua’s enemy. Many thought that after impeachment that the former deputy president would retreat to a quiet life outside of politics but as described by his former boss, Mr. Gachagua or Riggy G as he is popular referred to made a quick return to the political arena positioning himself as the Mt Kenya kingpin and establishing the DCP Party which he hopes to use as a vehicle for his presidential campaign in 2027.

With the 2027 general election being only two years from now, the question that lingers regarding Rigathi Gachagua is whether or not he will be cleared to run by IEBC. If cleared to run by IEBC, Riggy G will be on the ballot in 2027, but if not cleared, it is up in the air whether Gachagua will throw his weight behind another candidate or seek a remedy from the courts to allow him to run.

The impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua was a double-edged sword. On one hand, his impeachment allowed Rigathi Gachagua to become the de facto leader of the opposition, but it remains to be seen whether his impeachment will disqualify him from running for office in 2027. It will be interesting to see who would win between Ruto and Gachagua if both are on the ballot. This is highly unlikely to happen as the law prevents those impeached from running for public office. The issue of being eligible to run for office after impeachment is a matter that Gachagua is currently in court seeking clarification on. The only mistake Gachagua made was to expose all the secrets of the political class in hopes that he would win the hearts of the people. Time will tell if this worked. Most importantly, however, it has allowed Kenyans to know the truth about their leaders. How else would we have known that government is based on shareholder agreements and the rampant corruption that is going on? Time will tell how far and where Riggy G will get in his quest to unite the mountain, find like-minded cousins, and whether he will succeed in removing his former boss at the ballot box come 2027.
