In Kenya today, something new is happening. It is not protests, it is not violence. It is young people deciding to register and vote. This movement is called “Tuko Kadi” meaning “We are Registered”. It may look simple, but it could change Kenya’s future in a big way.

What is Tuko Kadi?

Tuko Kadi is a movement led by young people (Gen Z), and the idea is simple- Go register as a voter! Many young people are now going to registration centers, posting their voter cards online, and encouraging friends to do the same. Voting is now becoming something cool and not boring like it once was.

Why is it important?

Kenya is preparing for the 2027 General Elections. Millions of new voters are needed, and most of them are young people. For a long time, the youth were seen as not being interested in politics and easily influenced, but now things are changing.

The youth have joined in protests and taking to the streets in regard to the high cost of living, bad leadership, and taxes, but many are realizing that protests alone do not change leadership, but voting does!

What makes this movement different?

It is led by the youth, there are no leaders and no political party, the young people are leading themselves mostly through social media.

It is peaceful, instead of fighting they are lining up to register and preparing to vote which is a calm and powerful way to create change

I also love the fact that they are choosing to vote for issues and not tribe which is very different from the past, where tribe influenced many votes

But there are big concerns, even with the positive movement there are still some worries

Rigging and Trust Issues is one of them and trust in results and confusion during vote counting is another. It really leaves the youth asking whether their votes will count.

Other concerns are that some people may not get a chance to register, the system may be slow or unfair and fake news on online platforms may confuse voters.

In the end all I can say is that UKO KADI is more than just a trend, it is a sign that Kenya’s young people are waking up and taking responsibility for their future and the future of their country. They are no longer waiting for change; they are preparing to create it through their votes. But the real test still stands ahead. It will depend on whether they show up on Election Day, whether the system will be fair and whether their voices will be counted. If they stay united and committed, this generation will have the power to shape a new and better Kenya!
