Why Does Everyone Start A Podcast?

Have you ever wondered why everyone and their mum start a podcast? The other day, my mother asked me that very question. The answer is simple, and it is not because of the internet.

The reason that literally anyone can start a podcast is that, unlike many other businesses or hobbies, there are no barriers to entry. You do not need fancy equipment or a podcast studio to start a podcast. While having these things does help, they are not necessary.

You can record your podcast on a smartphone or using a laptop, which is something almost everyone has. While video podcasts are becoming increasingly popular, even video podcasts can be recorded using a cellphone camera.

Here is the thing, though, just because you start a podcast does not mean you are going to make money from that podcast. What most people forget is that the people who make the most money from podcasting have been doing it for several years. So, you aren’t going to start your podcast today and become Joe Rogan. But you can start your podcast without leaving your house or spending any money, which is not something that can be said about a lot of other businesses or hobbies.

Businesses or hobbies need money to start; podcasting does not. That is why you or millions of others have either tried to start a podcast, are currently working on a podcast, or are thinking about doing a podcast. It’s okay, that’s the beauty of the internet. Anybody should be allowed to start a podcast, but not everyone should have a podcast. With podcasting comes freedom to express your opinions and ideas and hopefully find like-minded individuals who agree or relate to the content of your podcast.

History shows that those who are successful in podcasting are consistent, have a niche, and have learned their audience and what they like. Without an audience, a podcast is just you talking to yourself. The free advice we would like to offer anyone thinking about starting is to not spend any money and to simply use what they have until they have an audience.
